Learning Program

Suratu's structured approach follows a proven 5-phase system. Each phase includes assessments to track your progress. You can complete Phase 1 for basic conversation, Phase 2 to speak well, or continue through Phase 5 for native-level fluency.

Phase 1: Foundation (100 hours)

Phase 1A: Listening

50 hours focused on developing your listening comprehension skills. Build your ear for the language through immersive listening exercises.

50 hours combining listening with pronunciation practice. Start speaking with proper sounds and intonation.

After Phase 1: You'll be able to speak basic conversations. Reading & writing: For Afaan Oromo (Qubee/Latin script), you'll start learning to read and write from the beginning. For Amharic, reading and writing instruction begins after a few weeks.

Phase 2: Story Building (150 hours)

50 hours where you take the lead in conversations and story creation. Build confidence in expressing yourself.

How long is each lesson?

Standard lessons are 60 minutes. 90-minute sessions are available on request.

Do you teach both Afaan Oromo and Amharic?

Yes! Suratu teaches both Afaan Oromo and Amharic using the same structured approach.

What's the difference between learning to read Afaan Oromo vs Amharic?

Afaan Oromo uses Qubee (Latin script), so reading and writing starts from day one. Amharic uses its own script, so reading and writing instruction begins after a few weeks of listening and speaking.

How much will I be able to speak after Phase 1?

After completing Phase 1 (100 hours), you'll be able to handle basic conversations. After Phase 2 (250 total hours), you'll speak well and communicate effectively in most situations.

Where are in-person lessons?

In Addis Ababa or by arrangement if you are visiting Ethiopia. Remote lessons are available worldwide.
